Los cuentacuentos is a Spanish language and theater arts camp for students who want to build and improve their Spanish language skills through the magic of theater arts. We use an approach called Comprehensible Input (C.I.), to engage campers in active language learning while speaking, repeating and co-creating dialogue with the language teacher. While conversing in Spanish facilitated by the language teacher, campers interactively create a story that will transform into an original play. Youth-driven, the process will grow into an original piece of bilingual theater inspired by the campers, while building language skills and being courageously silly and having fun with language and art.
Throughout the day, the campers will work with an experienced language and art teacher duo to engage in a cooperative storytime and playwriting in Spanish, bilingual music with optional ukulele instruction, visual arts time to create painted sets, paper maché props, and theater games. We'll head to Franklin Square Park for lunch and recess. Families are invited to celebrate the learning and culmination of our camp with a celebratory showcase crafted from top to bottom by the bilingual campers.

05 FAQs
How much Spanish does my child need to know in order to participate?
Any level of Spanish, even basic beginners, can participate! We use a variety of proven language-teaching methods to build campers' language ability. Vocabulary is introduced slowly and clearly, with lots of visuals and frequent checks for comprehension to make sure everyone is engaged. The C.I. approach aims to build fluency by teaching campers common and useful Spanish phrases, as well as vocabulary that is of interest to them. No matter what their level, all students will grow in their language ability and have a creative and fun language learning opportunity that lasts.
What if my child doesn't want to act in the final performance?
Your camper may choose to participate in any of the creative projects that are involved in theater production such as, set design, story building, prop painting, dancing, music, and acting. We find ways for all campers to be involved in a meaningful way. From years of experience creating and directing a children's theater program, we've discovered that it's best to find ways for kids to contribute in a way that feels comfortable to them. Our mission is to allow children the opportunity to play with language, collaborate and create something original and magical through instruction and engagement in the variety of creative arts we offer.
